Nakanojo Biennale, Shima Onsen area.
When people forget something, how do they forget it? I asked graduates living in the area to sing the school song from a closed elementary school, and then edited it to resemble a chorus, and projected the images onto a screen with drums that were left behind at the school and are no longer played. The songs are echoed directly from the drums through contact speakers in the classroom. Forgotten instruments and forgotten songs. The school song is a special kind of song, that used to be routinely sung, but suddenly stopped being sung when the school was closed. Although they form a nostalgia of the community, they are not songs that the singers spontaneously learned, and if there is no place for them to be sung, they will disappear. This is a work that reminds us of the many songs that are now being forgotten all over Japan, and that are also connected to the national anthem.
